New smart speaker expected as Apple kicks off conference

There's also a new MusicKit API. We expect to get our first glimpse at iOS 11 and macOS 10.13, although recent reports suggest we could also see some new hardware.

To be "smart", the latest product in Apple's portfolio, known as HomePod, comes with a A8 microprocessor chip, the same power engine in the company's flagship iPhone smartphone and iPad tablet computer.

Attendees wait for the start of the 2017 Apple Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC). This included a landscape with buildings, virtual people running around, and flying vehicles attacking the "town" - all rendered in AR, in real time.

"We've used deep learning to create a really natural and expressive voice for Siri", Craig Federighi, Apple's senior vice president of Software Engineering, said during the event.

Apple Pay, P2P: Person-to-person payments are now part of Apple's Messages app.

Apple is expected to announce plans for a speaker on Monday.

Siri is also getting improved context sensitivity so if someone in Messages asks "Where are you?", it can offer up your location as a keyboard suggestion.

Apple has also added features and updates to the Workout and Activity apps.

It will also show you the speed limit in an area you're driving through and tell you what lane to get into before you make a turn. If anyone texts you during your drive, Maps can send them an automatic text, telling them you'll call or text back when you arrive at your destination. If they reply "urgent" to that message, that message will be marked as such and go through.

Apple is known for its ecosystem - its catalogue of products, which includes the iPhone, MacBook, iPad and Apple TV, working harmoniously. In a keynote demo, Federighi placed a digital cup, vase and lamp on an onstage table, and showed how the objects' shadows were able to interact with each other.

The Cupertino company also delivered some augmented reality (AR) news, revealing the AR Kit for developers. Apple said that makes the Mac a great platform for development virtual-reality "experiences". The 12-inch MacBook is also expected to get an update, but it's unclear whether that would be a Kaby Lake chip. The result is a device that will feel more like a remote control.

The biggest changes here are a move to the seventh generation Intel Core series chips and faster storage for select models.

Other features coming to the Mac include the ability to stop video from automatically playing on websites when using Safari. While iOS 11 doesn't rewrite playbook with regards to the all-important user interface, there are a lot of thoughtful additions that have been made to make it even more useful for everyday consumers.
