CT 2017: Pakistan bowlers restrict England to 211

Hosts and favourites England were always fancied to reach the ICC Champions Trophy semis but Pakistan's presence is something of a surprise.

Chasing a low target, the most important thing for Pakistan was a solid start, and Fakhar and Azhar provided them with just that, putting on a 118-run stand in 21.1 overs, with the youngster making 57 off 58. It was an unexpectedly one-sided semifinal as two-time finalist England continue their quest for a global 50-over title in any tournament.

England had played a group match on the ground against New Zealand.

Sarfraz also confirmed spinner Imad Wasim is expected to be fit for the final at The Oval despite picking up a calf injury during the first innings.

England captain Eoin Morgan, who made 87 in a win against Australia last time out, fell for 19 when he charged down the pitch to a wide ball from Hasan and edged behind.

"I don't think we were simply used to it".

"Going into this game knowing that we were going to play on a used wicket potentially brought Pakistan's game closer to their home". Find us on Facebook too!

After that Joe Root and Morgan built steadily to 128-2 and the flawless platform. They lost in the final of the Champions Trophy when it was staged here in 2013 and then also in the final of the World Twenty20 previous year, albeit that was down to a freak final over when Carlos Brathwaite clubbed Ben Stokes for four successive sixes.

For England Jonny Bairstow made 43, Joe Root 46, Morgan 33 and danger man Ben Stokes 34.

Rumman took 2-44 on debut in Cardiff, while Junaid Khan chipped in with 2-42 from his 8.5 overs.

Asked how that came about, Morgan said: "I think the explanation is they played two days ago on it".

"Obviously, he's our main bowler". Their bowlers bowl good lines, use the reverse swing well, the captain knows when to use which bowler, all the traits which are taught to you when you start cricket at the professional level.

"Credit goes to Sarfraz and the way he led the team, we kept taking wickets and kept the run-rate in check. We have some really capable batsmen in our team and they way they performed today, you have to give credit to them", he pointed out. Now, I can hope that our team will get much more support in the times to come.

Set just 212 to win, Pakistan finished on 215 for two.

Moeen Ali was brilliantly caught at deep square leg by Fakhar, Adil Rashid was run out by sub fielder Ahmed Shehzad's direct hit and, when Mark Wood was run out attempting a single to wicketkeeper Sarfraz, it completed a collapse of eight wickets for 83 runs. Azhar Ali smashed Stokes for another six and a four in the 13th over as Pakistan moved to 78-0. He is No. 7 in the ICC all-rounder rankings but had an all-round miserable game.

Pakistan (Azhar Ali 76, Hasan Ali three for 35) bt.

Number three Babar Azam played sensibly for his unbeaten 38 off 45 balls and so did Mohammad Hafeez (31 off 21), who hit the winning boundary to spark wild celebrations.
