Wife of alleged Virginia shooter: 'I can't believe he did this'

The House of Representatives' No. 3 Republican leader was in grave condition when he was first shot.

The charity game pitting Republican lawmakers against their Democratic colleagues was set to proceed as scheduled at 7:05 p.m.at Nationals Park, home of the Washington Nationals Major League Baseball team, with thousands of spectators expected in the stands.

However, the truth was that, while Hodgkinson may have been jobless and living out of his gym bag when in Virginia, he had actually owned a home inspection business, which he dissolved before heading to D.C.

Capitol Police officers at the scene Wednesday morning returned fire, wounding Hodgkinson.

Investigators say they still do not know if the shooter James T. Hodgkinson had an attack plan. "I just want you all to go away and leave my neighbors in peace".

The FBI says Hodgkinson left his IL home months ago, and he was living out of a van in Alexandria, where he frequented the YMCA, and even engaged in conversations with the former mayor.

In a 2010 letter, he wrote, "I don't envy the rich; I despise the way they have bought our politicians..." Sue, who is employed by a tax firm, said she had been working very long hours during the first quarter of the year and knew very little about what her husband was doing at that time.

Bill Schaumleffel, who lives near Hodgkinson's home, said he was outside shooting a rifle that day and wouldn't stop.

The wife of James Hodgkinson, who authorities say shot a congressman and injured others at a ballfield in Virginia, had no idea her husband would do it, and was sorry it happened. Wednesday, they said the IL resident had been living out of his auto in the D.C. area since March.

Five years after that, in 1989, her mother and father terminated their parental rights, and she floated around from home to home until ending up with the Hodgkinsons in 1996.

Flake said two members of Scalise's security detail were wounded, and another man was wounded in the chest. "He underwent immediate surgery, and an additional procedure to stop bleeding".

The victims of the shooting, while some are in critical condition, are all expected to survive. The Congressman will require additional operations, and will be in the hospital for some time.

Rep. Ron DeSantis, R-Fla., and Rep. Jeff Duncan, R-S.C., had left the field early and actually crossed paths with the shooter in the parking lot. Matt Mika, director of government relations for Tysons Foods, was shot twice in the chest.

In March, Sheriff's deputies came out to Hodgkinson's house in IL after a neighbor reported hearing 50 gunshots.

Capitol Police officer Crystal Griner, who was shot in the ankle, was hospitalized Thursday. A congressional staffer, Zach Barth, was shot in the leg; he was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, the Post reports.
