Euille, who was mayor until early 2016, said Hodgkinson asked for job advice, saying he was a home inspector. James graduated Belleville West High School in 1968. The shooter's wife told the press she thought her husband went to Washington, D.C., to work on tax policy.

Sue Hodgkinson spoke to reporters Thursday outsider her Belleville, Illinois, home.

The wife of Alexandria, Va. Shooter James Hodgkinson is speaking out for the first time.

Before James Hodgkinson left his home in Belleville, Ill., in March, he sold almost everything he owned from his businesses. By Tuesday, he seemed ready to come home, asking a mechanic to make sure his tires would survive the trip back to IL. "How dare they?" retorted Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, pointing to a year of venomous attacks by Republicans including President Donald Trump.

Pelosi and other Democrats charged that Trump himself bears responsibility for the virulent state of political discourse - and some said for Wednesday's attack as well, given his embrace of aggressive rhetoric on the campaign trail and the outbreaks of violence at some of his rallies. His voice got loud and deep.

After it was confirmed James Hodgkinson shot Scalise and four others during a practice for the annual Congressional Baseball Game, Sen.

It was not clear if Hodgkinson had planned the attack, or for how long.

When she would try to leave, he would start "hitting her arms, pulling her hair, and started grabbing her off the bed".

Hodgkinson, a Belleville, Illinois, home inspector who had been living out of his van near the park, had a social media page filled with criticism of Republicans and the Trump administration. He was a fiery guy, known for the occasional bar fight.

"You have people on both sides but everyone gets along", said Hatch.

The couple had 1 foster daughter and had taken legal guardianship in 2002 of their 12-year-old great-niece, Cathy Lynn Putnam.

Before the event, Pelosi told reporters, "Tonight we will go to the game, play our hardest, but we will all be Team Scalise". In late May a white supremacist in Portland, Oregon, also killed two white men (and severely injured a third) who came to the defense of two young women of color whom he was verbally assaulting and threatening on a commuter train. What did she say?

Brooks estimated that there were 50 to 100 shots fired.

"I can't believe he did this, I can't believe", she said, adding that her husband left for Washington in March, and she hadn't seen him since then.

The FBI said authorities are speaking with people who knew Hodgkinson or who may have encountered him. "I can't wrap my head around it, okay?" Even his email address was basic: hodg@att.net.

WANG: Yeah, I've talked to some folks, and they say that they're surprised that this happened. "But he never really implied one way or the other that he was pro-Democrat, anti-GOP Republican or anything like that".

Hodgkinson's daily routine was to sit for hours in the YMCA, looking at his laptop, not using the exercise equipment, but sometimes using the sauna, Euille said.

"I didn't like him from the beginning", she said. Scalise's security detail returned fire. One was Joe Theismann's Restaurant, where staffers said one waitress recalled seeing Hodgkinson. Let's listen to a clip of what she said.

Hodgkinson told the YMCA on Tuesday that he wanted to cancel his membership because he was moving, the YMCA said in a statement.

Exasperated and seemingly at a loss to explain the shooting, she said: "I don't know anything about this". "I know we'll be thinking about each of them as they take the field tonight".
