MLAs who cross-voted will be suspended: Congress

In spite of that, at midnight the results were declared and Patel got elected. Ahmed Patel's son Faisal Patel termed his father's victory as historic and extended his wishes to Congress party.

For the three seats, BJP had contested national president Amit Shah, Union Minister Smriti Irani and Congress defector Balwantsinh Rajput.

Even in Patel's victory, the signs for the Congress are ominous. "The two Congress MLAs, who were manipulated to reveal their voting slip, were managed by Congress leader-manager Rajiv Shukla". Miffed at not being projected as the party's Chief Ministerial candidate, Mr Vaghela had quit on his birthday last month. One of these was Balwantsinh Rajput. "In case I'm not with Congress, you know where will I be", Congress MLA Raghavji Patel said in the wake of making his choice for BJP. The party claimed the MLAs had shown their ballot papers to Amit Shah. A fortnight ago, an engineered defection of six MLAs led by Shankersinh Vaghela, brought the number of Congress MLAs from 57 to 51. He found it hard to vote against the BJP for fear of reprisal from its bosses.

"Everyone thought Amit Shah (BJP president) is always successful in unlawful, negative things but Gujarat proved this kind of authority won't work", Gujarat Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki said soon after EC's verdict came out in favour of Congress.

"The act of yours not only amounts to anti-party activity, breach of discipline but is also treachery", Tyagi said in the letter. "If we had done that about 22 MLAs would have joined the party, "said top leader". Narendra Modi and Shah want Patel defeated at any cost, so who cares what the law says? Ironically, there were many claimants for this one solitary vote which won Patel the self-confessedly "most hard election of his life". NCP has two and JD (U) has one MLA in the house. They (BJP) tried level best to buy our MLAs but failed and that is why I salute my MLAs. "But Vaghela betrayed Ahmed Patel during polling", the source said. █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ █ What's the fuss about?

In a huge sigh of relief for the Congress, the two votes were disqualified.

Later, Shaktisinh Gohil and Arjun Modhwadia of the Congress and state BJP president Jitu Vaghani viewed the videography of the polling.

A body of Congress delegates including RS Surjewala and RPN Singh arrived the election commission's office in the evening. According to the rules, they are not allowed to show it to anyone other than the authorised representative. Patel is struggling to be re-elected to the Upper House and needs the votes of 45 MLAs.
