Andrew Benintendi Has Huge Game, Helps Red Sox Even Series Vs. Yankees

For a rookie who began this month on the bench, Andrew Benintendi is putting up a monster August. "We've continued to pitch consistently, and that will be the key for us", Red Sox manager John Farrell told reporters after an 8-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday.

They still hold a 3.5 game lead over the Yankees in the AL East.

After the game, Reed stated that Hicks "played to the ballpark", making a reference to Yankee Stadium's 314 foot, right field wall. It was just a freak accident.

Said Montgomery, "I was behind a net".

"As soon as the ball was pretty deep, I thought in my mind, 'If he throws me out, it's got to be the flawless throw, a strong throw, because of my speed, '" Nunez said. I wasn't trying to hit anybody.

That stat would be prescient for Friday's matchup against Red Sox southpaw Eduardo Rodriguez. He strained an oblique muscle in his right side and sat out the next 39 games, during which the Yankees were 19-20 and went from being tied for first place to four games behind.

"A mental break", Benintendi said.

Eddie Rosario and Max Kepler each hit home runs that drove in a total of five runs and powered Minnesota to a victory over Detroit that was its sixth win in a row. He stranded two runners in the first and pitched around one-out doubles to Hicks in the third and to Torreyes in the fifth - the only hits he allowed in six innings. Rosario put the Indians ahead with a three-run homer in the fourth, one inning after Kepler hit a two-run shot.

It was Benintendi's third career multi-homer game. Many times the Red Sox will point to scouting reports and preparation for the reasoning behind their baserunning.

"Today, that's why I'm here", Nunez said. Instead, he became the first Yankees pitcher to give up 10 runs at the new Yankee Stadium since it opened in 2009.

Severino saw his four-game winning start end as he allowed career highs of 10 runs (eight earned) and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.

"Every starter has a bad day". "He's really good, and his stuff doesn't fall off late in the game. He wasn't as sharp as he's been".

Over 89 plate appearances, our models have Young for 3 home runs, 10 RBI and a.256 average the remainder of the 2017 season.

Young served as the team's DH last night, but he will cede those duties to Hanley Ramirez as Mitch Moreland re-enters the lineup this afternoon in NY.

After being manhandled twice this season by Severino at Fenway Park, the Red Sox turned the momentum their way and issued a big payback.

The rally came after Rodriguez shut down the Yankees on two hits and two walks while striking out seven over six innings. Boston are 3-9 in the last 12 meetings and the under is 8-3 in the last 11 meetings. Zach Cozart and Tucker Barnhart hit solo homers to back Homer Bailey, who left after giving up two runs over five innings. Pedroia could be headed to the disabled list for the third time this season. For the second straight start, the left-hander was in control.

NOTES: The Red Sox placed 2B Dustin Pedroia (left knee inflammation) on the 10-day DL while the Yankees put RHP Masahiro Tanaka (right shoulder inflammation) on the DL. He said he doesn't think he'll be out too long.

Montgomery was set to start tomorrow's game between the Yankees and Red Sox. He threw 123 pitches in five innings during a 5-4 win at NY on June 6 and took a no-decision July 14 in a 5-4 win when he allowed four runs and six hits in six innings.

Montgomery, 24, is 7-6 with a 4.05 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 21 starts with the Yankees this season.
