Right now the health department's public awareness efforts have focused on the opioid crisis, but given the number of infected mosquito pools - eight have been found in Niagara this month, according to public health data - more awareness around West Nile Virus is likely.

The DeKalb County Health Department has reported that mosquitoes collected in a trap in Sycamore tested positive for West Nile virus.

A horse in Yellowstone County is the first in Montana this year to come down with West Nile Virus.

"We have not had a confirmed case of West Nile Virus in Erie County since October 2012 and we want to ensure it stays that way", said Dr. Gale Burstein, Erie County Commissioner of Health in a released statement. Because infected birds can pass on West Nile virus when they are bitten by mosquitoes, prevention strategies include monitoring avian cases.

Animals associated with West Nile virus in OH include birds, horses, and mosquitoes.

Boulder County Public Health and Longmont officials urge residents to take necessary precautions to protect themselves.

The residents were from Humphreys and Forrest (a previously reported case) counties. However, some localized spraying becomes necessary when the West Nile mosquito population increases where habitat and weather conditions increase their likelihood.

Approximately 80 percent of people infected experience no symptoms, but up to 20 percent can develop a mild illness, called West Nile fever.

There have been no deaths this season, and the six people in Colorado are now recovering.

There is no vaccine for humans for mosquito-borne diseases, nor is there a specific treatment. Additionally, they should remove or treat areas where water settles for several days and keep gutters and yards free of debris where mosquitoes may collect.

Repel - when outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long trousers and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or IR 3535 according to label instructions.

About one in 150 will have more serious symptoms such as muscle weakness, stiff neck, confusion, tremors, numbness, and sensitivity to light.
