Mr Musk intends to finance his 10 billion U.S. dollar Mars endeavour by using a rocket that's smaller than the one outlined previous year.

Musk himself said, however, that the most important point of the whole project is figuring out how to pay for it.

According to Musk the plan is to first bring travelers to sea-based rocket pads. Current rocket prototypes provide cabin space suitable for about 100 people per mission, he said.

Musk, the SpaceX founder, revealed plans for his newest streamlined travel concept Thursday.

A large scale rocket that is intended for travel to Mars and perhaps other planets in our solar system. Space X says it might also be able to be repurposed for Earth travel - say NY to Hong Kong in less than an hour.

In fact, a journey from London to NY would take just 29 minutes. Musk says the cost for a passenger should only be about the same as economy class on an aircraft.

During this time, the rocket would have travelled a distance of 11,000km at a speed of 27,000kph - a feat that would put the historic Concorde to shame.

What is BFR?If everything goes to plan, the Big Fucking Rocket (BFR) to be developed by SpaceX, will take you between any two cities on Earth in less than an hour, with most long-distance trips in under 30min.

Once constructed the BFR will be used to launch satellites and service the International Space Station - as the company's Falcon 9 rocket is now doing.

SpaceX wants to use all that technology for more than just bringing humans into outer space. These are the same rockets that Musk and his SpaceX team develop to cover future trips between planet Earth and Mars (something they hope to achieve in 2024).

Musk proposed an Interplanetary Transport System space vehicle that could theoretically take humans to the Red Planet in the future at the same forum previous year.
