Saban, who has won four national titles in the last eight seasons at Alabama, cited UCLA's improbable comeback as an example of why he tells his team to play hard for four quarters, no matter how big a lead the Crimson Tide has.

"We have to be focused enough and mentally tough enough to keep our focus on football", Luke said. "We weren't sure of ourselves, and we weren't attacking. We're trying to get him as much experience as possible", Luke said.

The bridge between simplicity and player confidence, which coaches equate with quick reactions on the field, has been a common theme since the beginning of spring drills.

Offensive coordinator Phil Longo agreed this was the best decision. That creates an extra emphasis on Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson's ability to take care of the ball.

That said, the Auburn defense is terrific.

Georgia's win might have been more surprising, in that no one expected them to roll into Knoxville and shut out the Vols.

The junior college transfer, who enrolled in January and went through spring drills, got in the Tennessee-Martin game for a handoff.

Senior defensive end Da'Shawn Hand went down with a left leg injury against the Rebels in the third quarter and had to be helped off the field.

"At the end of the day, I could not care less who's at the game", Hurts said. Alabama will use three running backs (Damien Harris, Najee Harris, and Bo Scarbrough), so Gates and Bing-Dukes (or whoever is playing alongside Gates in the middle) will need to stay alert and look for the run. Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that Alabama will win this, but that 24.5 spread? He'll be limited in practice this week. Ole Miss had a week off after losing at Cal. This week the Rebels dropped to No. 129 in spite of a 100-yard rushing effort from Jordan Wilkins at Alabama.

Jeremy Pruitt's Alabama defense now ranks sixth in the nation, allowing just 249.0 yards per game to opponents.

Hurts combined for 291 of his 298 total yards of offense and three touchdowns in the first half, including 197 yards on 12 of 18 passing and two scores, to spark Alabama to a 35-3 lead by halftime. The sophomore quarterback was developing a quiet maturity late last season, which has only been enhanced so far in 2017.

"I think a lot of people were very, very excited for him - so excited that we really could have gotten a penalty because the guys ran out on the field without their helmet on, so we caught a break on that one", coach Nick Saban said.
