Cubs Announce Playoff Rotation, Hendricks Named NLDS Game 1 Starter

With a history of first-round exits, the Nationals refused to buy into the narrative of "here we go again".

The Cubs beat Strasburg and the Nats by a 3-0 margin in Game 1 as Kyle Hendricks was dominating in allowing just two hits in seven innings, and the Chicago bullpen closed out the final two innings. Washington was beat by the St. Louis Cardinals at home in Game 5 in 2012, on the road by the San Francisco Giants in 2014 in a four-game series, and at home in Game 5 past year by the Los Angeles Dodgers. His potent lineup that finished fourth in the majors in team batting (.268) and fifth in runs (819) managed just two hits (none after the second inning) against a pitcher who can't top 90 miles per hour.

Strasburg, meanwhile, has been just about as dominant in 2017, going 15-4 with a 2.52 ERA and 204 strikeouts — and particularly terrific down the stretch, with a 5-1 record and 0.84 ERA in his last eight starts.

Hendricks meanwhile was excellent through seven innings of work, giving up just two hits, three walks and no runs while striking out six batters.

That was essentially enough, thanks to a workmanlike performance from Kyle Hendricks.

Nothing was doing for them five innings into the game.

At least until Game 2.

"It's a cool thing for [Hendricks]. I had a conversation with him today, and he said he felt even better". "Suffice it to say he's going to pitch in the playoffs here against the Cubs", Rizzo said.

And Gonzalez (15-9, 2.96 ERA) is not a frightful option. He does have a very impressive resume when it comes to playoff success. But he also has this key career stat: Murphy is 0 for 6 against Wilson with three strikeouts.

Boston's pitchers get a breather after being battered by the Astros in the first two games of their ALDS, and almost all the arms need a rest in the Yankees-Indians series following Friday's extra-inning showdown.

I'll be live from Nationals Park all afternoon on the Roe Conn Show with Anna Davlantes, 3-7 P.M.

This year, Baez was front and center in a different way, helping the Cubs open the postseason with a win. Quintana has never faced the Nationals in his career. Game Two is Saturday afternoon in DC.

There were a few spots early in the game where it looked like he was in a bit of trouble.

The mistake would change the game. The whole Nationals season - perhaps a whole era - could depend on it. "And it led to a two-out hit, and they got three two-strike, two-out hits, and that was the ballgame".

The Nationals have yet to release their rotation for the NLDS and will likely be releasing it Thursday. However, all the talk has been about when ace pitcher Max Scherzer will be back in action.

The Park at Wrigley will host away game viewings during the NLDS, beginning on Friday.

The beauty of a pitchers' duel is the reality that at some point, it will end.

Hendricks gets the ball Friday night when Chicago visits the Washington Nationals for the opener of their NL Division Series.

Chicago is 8-1 in Lester's last 9 starts against the NL East and 16-5 in their last 21 games overall while the under is 7-2 in their last 9 road games.
