Iwobi fires Super Eagles to Russian Federation 2018 World Cup

Super Eagles' Assistant Coach, Salisu Yusuf, on Thursday said the players were in good mood and ready to conquer Zambia on Saturday in their World Cup qualifier.

The infusion of U-20 starlets that won the Africa Cup of Nations on home soil and had a quarterfinal finish at the FIFA World Cup has given Zambia a reinvigorated outlook with their race to Russian Federation revived.

"The most hard game was today (vs Zambia) because we had to win to qualify, we were favourites and we are at home".

The Arsenal forward was also the one that opened scoring for the Eagles in Ndola, in the opening CAF Group B World Cup qualifier against the Zambians team, before Kelechi Iheanacho, sealed it with another goal to make it 2-1. It's an important game and we have it in our hands to win.

Clinton N'Jie and the debuting Frantz Pangop fired Cameroon past Algeria as the reigning African champions secured a 2-0 win in Yaounde in a Group B dead rubber.

Their only match not to win was a 1-1 draw away to Cameroon.

Several young players, like Leicester City pair Kelechi Iheanacho and Wilfred Ndidi and Arsenal's Alex Iwobi, have stepped up to the full global game after gaining first-team experience in the English top flight.

Both sides had chances to score, with Odion Ighalo, Jon Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Wilfred Ndidi all going close for the hosts.

This will be the fifth World Cup for Nigeria, appearing in 1994, 1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014. But, eventually, Nigeria topped that group and made it to the World Cup.

Naby Keita had put a huge dent in their hopes with a 35th-minute strike, but Msakni levelled with the last kick of the first half, firing home a free-kick.

Saturday's home game against Zambia was the toughest for his team, Rohr said.

The Super Eagles had only needed a win to seal a spot in the 32-nation competition next summer in Russian Federation.
